Client case study
Photographer

Emma is a good friend of mine and she approached me for help improving her website. As a photographer her website acts as an important tool for showcasing her work and for booking new clients as well as selling prints and photo downloads. Entering into this project, I wanted to make sure that her website branding reflected her values as a business and also her personal style as an artist. I also wanted to make sure that the organization of the site was optimized for booking dream clients in the industries that Emma works within.

Challenges

We started with a pretty good base already, with copy that only needed a little bit of editing and sectioning. I pulled out headlines from large blocks of text to make the pages easier to read and skim. The main challenge of this website was going to be in the photo choices. As a photography website I wanted to make sure that the photos that were showcased on the home page especially but also throughout the website were among Emma’s strongest images.

Because Emma wanted to focus on attracting more clients interested in Engagement and Wedding sessions, I made sure to choose images from her extensive client archive which highlighted emotional and intimate moments of celebration and love.

Design Solutions

For the branding, we decided to go for a neutral pallet, which reflects Emma’s minimal, and elegant style as well as allowing the color of the photographs to shine through. Choosing a minimal, sans-serif font for the headings also helped to tie everything together and create ease and flow while moving through the site. In order to convert site viewers into potential clients, I added a CTA (call to action) at the bottom of every page directing site visitors to Emma’s booking page.

A custom logo package was designed as part of our work together. Emma wanted a logo which would act as a signature on her photos and work when used as a watermark, and also create timeless brand recognition. The handwritten font that is used in her logo, serves to convey the personal touch that is present in all of her professional work with clients. The text is sheltered by the line of a mountain creating depth and distance with only one stroke. The imagery of the mountain conveys a sense of place as Emma’s primary location is the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire.

Final Product

With intentional changes and design, Emma’s final website is a breath of fresh New Hampshire air, where potential clients can spend time looking at her gorgeous photographs and imagine capturing their own special moments. The website is clean, warm, inviting and showcases Emma’s skill with the camera to capture intimate and emotional moments with images. The design is successful in fulfilling the website’s main function, which is to direct the site viewers to book a session with Emma to capture the unforgettable moments of life.

Emma:

I loved Leaf’s process from start to finish. It was super helpful to have a template of the services laid out and see what they were offering and could get done within x amount of hours. They listened very well and I liked their slow approach with taking their time to really work on things and not rush. I have a hard time not rushing so it was nice for me to experience. Leaf created a moodboard and color palette for me and set up multiple meetings to check in.

Leaf has been a lifelong friend of mine. I knew they designed websites. I needed to update my website and reached out. Once I started working with Leaf, I realized how much I needed some fresh eyes. I initially sent a very detailed long email of specific things I wanted to update or change but I wanted Leaf to have creativity too. Since I'm a photographer I see my same images over and over. Leaf combed through many of my client galleries to add fresh, diversified photos to my website. They chose ones that I had completely forgotten about but are exactly what my website needed. Leaf was so easy to work with. I never felt like I was asking too much or was being rushed working with them.

They wanted to help me achieve what I was envisioning and they did! I LOVE the scrolling effect that my website now has when I look at it on my phone. Because of social media scrolling is what is natural at this point, so instead of having a million links that click out of the website or just take you to another place without anywhere further to go, the scrolling style that Leaf set up takes you through my website like you're going on a tour and end at the gift shop.

They were also very transparent with me about how they work and communication is key. The project was done very well and I will love to work with them in the future. Leaf is someone you can trust to have your best interests in mind and create the best website for your business.
